Thomas Puppendahl
Founder & Managing Director
Mr Puppendahl is an investment professional with over 20 years of experience in global capital markets as a portfolio manager, strategist, investment banker and analyst. He has managed sovereign debt, equity and macro portfolios and was an early investor in emerging markets and precious metals. Prior to setting up Chancery Asset Management, Mr Puppendahl worked with Merrill Lynch International, Ermgassen & Co, a London-based investment banking firm, and the Monitor Group, a global management consulting and private equity investment firm, in London and India.
Mr Puppendahl started his career as an analyst in the Mergers & Acquisitions department of Merrill Lynch in London, where he worked on major international M&A transactions across multiple industry sectors and was instrumental in closing a high-profile $1.9 billion deal in the midst of the Asian crisis in 1998.
In 1999, Mr Puppendahl joined Ermgassen & Co, a London-based investment banking firm focused on European cross-border M&A advisory services. He advised some of the world's largest and most reputable companies, such as Siemens, Chevron and Sanofi, on complex cross-border M&A transactions in various industry sectors with a focus on the technology, chemicals and biotech/pharmaceutical industries.
In 2005, Ermgassen & Co became a member of the Monitor Group (now Monitor Deloitte), a global strategy consulting firm founded by Harvard University Professor Michael Porter. As a Global Account Manager of the Monitor Group, Mr Puppendahl has advised numerous blue-chip clients on international growth strategies in India and other emerging markets and helped expand Monitor's business in India to a new level. Following the acquisition of the Monitor Group by Deloitte in 2012, he continues to serve as a Senior Adviser to Ermgassen & Co.
Known for his contrarian and sometimes provocative ideas, Mr Puppendahl invested aggressively in Argentina's bond restructuring in 2004/05 before the market realised the value embedded in the country's GDP warrants, forecasted a four-digit gold price, and predicted the collapse of the US credit bubble in 2007.
Mr Puppendahl holds Master's degrees in both Physics and Business Administration from RWTH Aachen University, Germany. A native German speaker, he is fluent in English and French, and has basic knowledge of Hindi and Urdu.
